Off to the farm!
Hi Kevin!
Your Grammie and I went to the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm to get our veggies. This was the last day for veggies this year and boy was it cold there! Brrr! You can see me here in your Grammie's tote bag that she brings along to get the veggies.
Can you figure out some of the things we got by just looking at the tops of them? We got celery and leeks. (Your Grammie makes potato leek soup with that. She and your Grandpa Rock call it 'Leeky Potato Soup.) I'm standing on the potatoes, cabbage and carrots. Grandpa Rock is going to make a beef stew with the potatoes, carrots and celery.
The way a CSA works is neighbors of the farm all buy a share of the farm's produce. The farmers (Lisa and Ralph), then grow the veggies all summer and the neighbors come over once/week to pick out their veggies and sometimes flowers. Some CSA's also have shares of chicken or eggs that you can buy.
Ralph is an inventor, too. He has been working on projects all summer to convert the farm machinery to run on used cooking oil. He could get the oil from the fryolater at McDonald's and convert it into fuel for the tractors. I don't think he's quite got that running yet but he's working on it.
The name of the farm is 'Laughing Stock Farm'. It's a play on words. 'Laughing Stock' could mean that the farm animals (the 'stock') are all happy. Or, it could mean that people laughed at Lisa and Ralph when they started their farm.
Your Grammie says that she got tomatoes, potatoes, lettuces (different types of greens to make salad), beets, pumpkins, butternut squash, kale, corn, Brussel sprouts and other veggies this summer. Sounds yummy to me!
Hope you had fun trick or treating! I did! My favorite treat was a big eraser with a skeleton on it. How about you? What did you like best?
YF,
Flat Stanley
